Liquid Propane Gas (LPG) and Diesel Powered Forklifts

The tougher the environment of your worksite, the more heavy duty your equipment will need to be. Diesel powered lift trucks are the largest of the vehicles with load capacities between 1500 kg and 16000 kg. They are suitable for outdoor use and they are a good choice for towing or working on gradient surfaces.

Liquid Propane Gas lift (LPG) trucks are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Smaller and more maneuverable than their diesel counterparts, their maximum load capacity ranges from about 1500 kg to 7000 kg.

TYPES of Forklifts

Selecting the Right Equipment for the Job

Electric Motor Rider Trucks

Image
 • They are counterbalanced by the battery which serves as the counterweight for added stability
 • Perfect for indoor work – they are quiet and have no emissions
 • Weight capacity is between 3,000 and 12,000 lbs

These are electric powered trucks built for sit-down operations; standing models are available. The key feature of these trucks is that they are counterbalanced by the battery which acts as a counterweight. Being electric means the trucks are quieter and have no emissions. They are ideal for indoor use. Although the initial purchase cost is high, you will save a lot more on fuel and maintenance. The typical weight capacity is 3,000 to 8,000 lbs.

Electric Motor Narrow Aisle Trucks

Image
 • Ideal for narrow aisles thanks to their maneuverability and size
 • Perfect for picking and putting inventory away
 • Weight capacity ranges from 3,000 to 5,000 lbs

Thanks to their size and maneuverability, these trucks are designed for use in tight spaces. They are perfect for racking space without having to expand the existing footprint of the warehouse. The Class II forklifts are mostly standup units although sit-down models are available.

The Class II have reach trucks which allow the operator to guide the fork to reach up and grab pallets and order pickers that raise the operator’s platform to grab items. These trucks are ideal for picking and putting away inventory. Options include turret trucks and side-loaders.

Electric Motor Hand Trucks or Hand/Rider Trucks

Image
 • Available in walk behind (walkie) and rider models
 • Perfect for short runs and small warehouses
 • Ideal for unloading deliveries off tractor-trailers and moving the load to the staging area.

The trucks are operated using a handle at the back. They come either as walked (hand trucks) or have a seat. These are basically low lift units also known as pallet jacks. They lift loads a few inches above ground. They are perfect for unloading deliveries fast and moving them to the next destination.

Class III forklifts are best for small warehouses and for short runs. Their average weight capacity is 8,000 lbs. The walk-behind stackers also belong to Class III.

Internal Combustion Engine Trucks (Solid/Cushion Tires)

Image
 • Low acquisition cost
 • Less downtime refueling
 • Ideal for moving pallets between the docks and storage
 • Weight capacity of 3,000 to 80,000 lbs

These are sit-down forklifts powered by an internal combustion engine and have solid tires for indoor use. They have a lower clearance area than pneumatic-tired forklifts thus ideal for low-clearance conditions. The engine may use diesel, gasoline or LP gas. The forklifts are perfect for moving pallets from storage to the docks and vice versa.

Internal combustion forklifts are preferred over electric models because of their low acquisition cost, less downtime when refueling/recharging and no charging station needed. They have a weight capacity of between 3,000 and 15,000 lbs. Powerful models have a capacity of 80,000 lbs.

Internal Combustion Engine Trucks (Pneumatic Tires)

Image
 • Built for outdoor use but can also be used in big warehouses.
 • Can be outfitted with the solid pneumatic tires for the tough work environments.
 • Have a weight capacity of 3,000 to 115,000 lbs.

These trucks are similar to Class IV (in terms of capabilities and chassis design) with the only difference being that they come with pneumatic tires which make them ideal for both indoor and outdoor use. They can be outfitted with the solid pneumatic tires too. These vehicles are not forklifts but tractors.

Class V trucks are available in single-wheel or dual back wheel configurations. Their weight capacity is 3,000 to 55,000 lbs. They can handle everything from single pallets to fully loaded 40-foot containers.

Electric and Internal Combustion Engine Tractors

Image
 • Used for pulling loads from one point to another without lifting.
 • Available in both internal combustion and electric powered models.

These are often referred to as tuggers. They are used for pulling loads from one point to another without lifting. They come in both internal combustion and electric powered models. These vehicles are used in a wide variety of applications both indoors and outdoors.

A high profile example of the Class VI forklift is seen in airports. You may have seen a rugged, low-slung tractor towing a long train of luggage carts from the terminal to the storage compartment of an airplane.

Rough Terrain Forklift Trucks

Image
 • Powered by diesel engines
 • Used exclusively outdoors
 • Common in construction sites and lumber yards
 • Have a weight capacity of 6,000 to 16,000 lbs and above

These vehicles are designed for use in rough terrain. They come with large flotation tires which come in handy in lumber yards and construction sites. The big, tractor-style tires offer great traction in challenging terrains. These trucks are powered almost exclusively by diesel engines and are used outdoors. They come in two-wheel or four-wheel drive. They may also have telescoping mast for a greater reach. Operating Class VII trucks requires special training due to the fact that the load may need telescoping out rather than just lifting up and down. They have an average weight capacity of 6,000 to 12,000 lbs.
